Florida gas prices declined for the 10th day in a row Monday, but spiking oil prices after Iran peace talks fail could bring more pain at the pump.

- Analysts predict oil prices could continue to climb, leading to higher costs at the pump for both gasoline and diesel.
Florida gas prices fell for the 10th consecutive day, including 7.6-cent decline over the weekend, to a statewide average of $4.016 per gallon Monday morning, but another big jump is likely coming this week.
"With a breakdown in (peace) talks and renewed escalation (in tensions with Iran) over the weekend, motorists should prepare for another round of price increases," wrote Patrick DeHaan, head of petroleum analysis for GasBuddy.com on April 13.
"The move (by the United States) toward a full blockade of the Strait of Hormuz is compounding global supply concerns and risks further disrupting flows, which pushed oil prices higher in Sunday night trading. As a result, gasoline prices are likely to jump again this week, with diesel expected to follow, until there is a meaningful restoration of shipping through the Strait."
How much have gas prices fallen in Florida since April 2?
As of April 13, the average price of regular gasoline in Florida remains up $1.133 a gallon since the start of the Iran War on Feb. 28, according to AAA-The Auto Club.
After peaking at $4.232 a gallon on April 2, gas prices in Florida began gradually declining amid then-rising hopes of an end to the Iran War or at least a full reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, the critically important waterway used by ships carrying 20% of the world's oil.
During that 10-day period of consecutive declines, which increased when the U.S. and Iran agreed to a two-week temporary ceasefire on April 7, the average price of regular gasoline in Florida has fallen 21.6 cents.
"This discount at the pump comes after price drops in both crude oil and gasoline futures last week," wrote Mark Jenkins, a Tampa-based spokesman for AAA in his weekly Florida fuel price update report on Sunday. "But it's unclear how long this downward trend can last. Continued uncertainty surrounding the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz is already pushing oil prices higher, which could put upward pressure on gas prices again."
Why are oil prices on the rise again?
After peace talks ended on April 10 without an agreement to end the war, President Donald Trump ordered a U.S. blockade of the the strait of ships from Iranian ports that was to begin at 10 a.m. Eastern time on Monday.
Iran had been allowing some ships to pass through the strait by charging a toll, but for the most part ship traffic through that critical waterway, which at its narrowest point is just 21 miles wide, has come to a halt because of the high risk of being attacked or damaged because of underwater mines.
The industry benchmark price of Brent crude oil, which has risen as high as $116.69 a barrel since the Iran War began, fell to $90 when the ceasefire began on April 8.
When global oil markets reopened for trading on Sunday night, after being closed for the weekend, prices for both Brent and West Texas Intermediate crude oil rose back over $100 a barrel amid renewed fears of a prolonged Iran War.
As of 11 a.m. Monday, Brent was trading at around $101 a barrel, while WTI crude was trading around $102.
When oil prices rise, how does that affect prices at the pump?
Industry experts estimate that a $10 per-barrel increase in the cost of crude oil can cause increases in retail gasoline prices of anywhere from 10 cents to as much as 40 cents a gallon, according to Wall Street Journal and Bloomberg news reports.
"When oil becomes untethered, market technicians can offer appropriate projections of where benchmarks might head," wrote independent oil industry analyst Tom Kloza in a post on the social media platform X on Sunday. "Likely near-term targets are $128-$134.50/bbl for Brent and $129-$130/bbl for WTI."
Kloza added in another post on X on Sunday, "AAA shows small wobble lower to (a national average price of) $4.125/gal. on gasoline and $5.66/gal. for diesel. This will be a brief intermission with prices resuming upward path this week. Diesel looks particularly prone to much higher numbers − the $5.816/gal record high from 2022 likely to fall."
Where do gas, diesel prices stand nationally on Monday?
The national average price of regular gasoline on Monday stood at $4.125 per gallon, unchanged from Sunday, while diesel was $5.562 a gallon, down 1.1 cents from the day before.
Diesel, which the trucking industry uses to transport goods, is up $1.882 a gallon nationally since the start of the Iran War.
In Florida, the average price of diesel on Monday was $5.67 a gallon, down 1.8 cents from Sunday, but remains $1.989 a gallon higher than when the war began.
That per-gallon increase in diesel prices quickly adds up for commercial long-haul truckers. Eighteen-wheeler semi-trucks used in the transporting of goods typically have fuel tanks that hold 200 to 300 gallons and require refilling every one to three days.
Truckers requiring a refill of 300 gallons of diesel now pay up to $596.7 more each time in Florida and as much as $564.6 each time on average nationally.
Competition is also a factor when it comes to prices at individual stations
Just south of Daytona Beach in Port Orange, two gas stations across the street from one another near Interstate 95 Exit 256, have been in a competition of sorts to offer lower fuel prices.
On Saturday, the 7-Eleven on the corner of Williamson Boulevard and Taylor Road lowered its price for regular gasoline from $4.03 a gallon to $3.99. The independent Royalty Gas & Smoke on the opposite corner lowered its price to from $3.99 to $3.92.
On Sunday, when the 7-Eleven lowered its price to $3.98, Royalty Gas also lowered its price, this time to $3.89.
The price for regular gasoline at the 7-Eleven across town on the corner of Dunlawton and Ridgewood avenues on Sunday? $4.13 a gallon.
